Definition:
Corneal ulcer otherwise known as the Ulcerative Keratitis is a medical condition whreby there is an inflammatory of the cornea thereby causing disruption of the epithelial layer and the corneal stoma.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis of the Corneal Ulcer is made through the examination of the eyes by the ophthalmologist and the use of slit lamp and the use of fluorescein stain. Microbiological culture test and Schirmer's test may also be used to confirm the condition.
Treatment:
Treatment includes antibiotic therapy to treat the infection, application of topical anti-fungal agents and proper diet and nutrition inasmuch as it may also be caused by vitamin A and C deficiencies. Corticosteroids and Anesthetics are also use to prevent infections.
Symptoms and Signs:
The symptoms of Corneal ulcers includes pain in the eye, too much tearing, squinting, blurred vision and redness of the eyes.
Causes:
Corneal Ulcer is said to be cause by trauma, chemical injury, eye infections, bacteria and fungi such as staphylococcus aureus, enterococci, pseudomonas and nocardia.
