Definition:
Delirium Tremens otherwise refered to as the DT's, the shaking delirium, is a medical condition where there is an acute episodes of delirium that is most often caused by withdrawal from excessive consumption of alcohol, of barbiturate and benzodiazepines.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is made through physical examination and review of medical history of the person.
Treatment:
Treatment for Delirium Tremens includes sedation with benzodiazepines like valium, ativan or serax. It may also include administration of antipsychotic drugs such as haloperidol or clomethiazole.
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms includes confusions, disorientation, fever, tachycardia, hypertension, hallucinations, delirium, formication and seizures.
Causes:
It is said to be caused by too much or years of consumption of alcohol and barbiturate. It may also be caused by head injury, infection and illness.
