Dislocation Of The Hip
Definition:

Dislocation of the hip, also known as coxofemoral luxation, affects domestic animals. It is a very common condition in cattle and dogs, which are due to trauma or as one of the complications of hip dysplasia.

Treatment:

There is no known cure for hip dislocation in animals. However, affected animals can live with this condition for a long time due to the formation of a pseudo-joint on the hips. Heavy animals tend to suffer more and live shorter.

Symptoms and Signs:

Dogs with a dislocated hip usually develop in an upwards or forwards direction. As such, the first sign of a dislocated hip in dogs is a shortened leg and prominent greater trochanter. In cattle, dislocation usually occur caudoventrally or craniodorsally, but other directions may happen. The symptom of hip dislocation includes shortened limbs with craniodorsal luxation stance and protrusion of the greater trochanter.

Causes:

Dislocation of the hip in animals may be caused by a variety of factors, including lifestyle, underlying conditions and environment.
