Definition:
Allan-Herndon-Dudley mental retardation is a rare genetic disorder that leads to severe mental retardation. This condition occurs only in males.
Diagnosis:
Observation of the symptoms as well as genetic testing is done to diagnose the onset of the disease.
Treatment:
There is no exact treatment for the disorder.
Symptoms and Signs:
Among the symptoms of the disease are eventual mental retardation, impaired speech, weak muscle tone, and joint deformities. As they grow older patients become bound on a wheelchair.
Causes:
The disease is caused by a defect in the gene SLC16A2.
