Distichia
Definition:

Distichia is known as the eyelash that grows on an abnormal spot on the eyelids of a dog. It usually exists at the duct of the meibomian gland right at the eyelid margin. Such eyelash usually grows two or more at the same time from a duct. Common breeds affected with this condition include Bulldog, Pekingese, Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Flat-coated Retriever, Shetland Sheepdog, Dachshund and Elo.

Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is made by physical examination and assessment of clinical signs.

Treatment:

Treatment options for Distichia include surgery, electrolysis, cryotherapy, electrocautery and manual removal.

Symptoms and Signs:

Lower eyelids of dogs typically have no eyelashes. When affected with this condition, it could affect both the upper and lower eyelids. These eyelashes usually are bilateral. Although Distichia is commonly asymptomatic because the lashes that abnormally grow are soft, these eyelashes may irritate the eye and lead to inflammation, tearing, squinting, scarring and corneal ulcers.
