Diverticular Disease
Definition:

Diverticular Disease is a medical condition whereby the diverticuli in the colon breaks or there is rupture that results from an infection in the tissues surrounding the colon.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is made through barium x-rays, sigmoidoscope, coloscopy, ultrasound and CT scan examination of the abdomen and pelvis.


Treatment:

Treatment includes administration of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, metronidazolem cephalexin and doxycyclin, high fiber diet, and in some cases surgery which involves the draining of any collections of pus and resectioning of the segment of the stigmoid colon.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symtoms includes abdominal cramping and pain, diarrhea, bloating, fever, constipation, urinary bladder infection, passing of gas during urination and inflammation of the colon.


Causes:

Diverticular Disease is said to be caused by the rupture or breakage of the diverticulum in the colon
