Definition:
Elaeophora schneideri is a roundworm that infects White-tailed deer and mules in the Rocky Mountain regions and Southern United States. It can also be found in Asia, Europe and Afrida. Other abnormal hosts include goats, moose, sheep and elk.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is made through necropsy to find adult worms in carotid arteries.
Treatment:
Treatment of Elaeophora schneideri involves repeated administration of “diethylcarbamazine”.
Symptoms and Signs:
Elaeophora schneideri worms do not cause any signs in normal hosts. However, abnormal hosts may develop facial dermatitis, horn deformities, necrosis of the optic nerves, muzzle and ears, lower limb dermatitis, blindness and even death.
