Entamoeba Histolytica
Definition:

Entamoeba histolytica is a parasite which is classified as anaerobic protozoan and included in the genus entamoeba which causes amoebic dysentery an amoebic liver abscess.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is made through examination of stool samples under the microscope to determine the presence of the parasite.


Treatment:

Treatment includes administration of metronidazole and the lumenal amoebicide such as paromomycin.


Symptoms and Signs:

It includes symptoms ranging from diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain and fulminating dysentery.


Causes:

Amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess is caused by the parasite entamoeba histolytica which usually thrive in the intestinal walls of the person resulting to lesions and intestinal symptoms and thereafter spread through the blood stream and reach the vital organs of the body particularly the liver, lungs and spleen.
