Definition:
Anal atresia is a congenital disorder in which the rectal passage is totally closed. It is also called an imperforate anus.
Diagnosis:
Sonography is the diagnostic procedure done to determine anal atresia.
Treatment:
Surgery is done to treat this disorder. A procedure is done to open a passage for feces through perineal anoplasty or colostomy.
Symptoms and Signs:
In an imperforate anus, the anal hole in which the stool passes through is missing. A fistula is also present, connecting the urethra, bladder and vagina.
Causes:
The exact cause of this malformation remains unknown.
