Definition:
Prediabetes is a medical condition in which the blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes.
Diagnosis:
To diagnose prediabetes, two blood screening tests are done: fasting blood sugar test and oral glucose tolerance test.
Treatment:
The best treatment for this condition is still healthy lifestyle choices, by eating healthy foods, and exercise. In some instances, oral diabetes medication, and medication to control high blood pressure or cholesterol may be necessary.
Symptoms and Signs:
Prediabetes often causes no symptom. Prediabetes may manifests only after it has already progressed to type 2 diabetes which has the following symptoms: slow-healing sores or frequent infection, unexplained weight loss, extreme hunger, increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, and fatigue.
Causes:
This condition results when sugar builds up in the bloodstream, which happens when the pancreas fails to make enough insulin or the cells become resistant to the action of insulin. This problem may be attributed to excess abdominal fat and inactivity.
