Definition:
Blackleg disease, also known as quarter ill or black quarter, is an infectious bacterial disease affecting sheep and cattle.
Treatment:
When sheep or cattle is infected, the best way to treat them is by stopping the spread of the disease through burning the upper layer of the soil in order to eradicate leftover spores. However, a blackleg vaccine (7-type clostridial vaccine) can be used in preventing the disease from affecting cattle.
Symptoms and Signs:
The symptom of blackleg is swelling that makes a cracking sound when placed under pressure.
Causes:
The disease is caused by two types of bacteria – Clostridium feseri and Clostridium Chauvoei, which are both found anywhere in the world.
