Definition:
Bovine herpesvirus 2, simply known as BHV-2, is a virus from the Herpesviridae family. This virus causes two types of diseases that affect cattle – pseudo-lumpyskin disease and bovine mammillitis. This virus is a counterpart to the human-infecting virus called “herpes simplex virus”.
Symptoms and Signs:
The symptoms of pseudo-lumpyskin, which is commonly found in southern Africa, include fever and skin nodules on the back, face and perineum. However, these symptoms usually resolve within a few weeks.
Symptoms of Bovine mammillitis are restricted to the udder and teats.
Causes:
Both the Bovine mammillitis and pseudo-lumpyskin are caused by the Bovine herpesvirus 2.
