Definition:
Adie’s tonic pupil is a neurological illness where in the pupil is damaged due to the inflammation of the postganglionic fibers of the eye.
Diagnosis:
The condition is diagnosed by clinical exams and measurement of chilonergic denervation supersensitivity, which is done by the use of pilocarpine drops.
Treatment:
Treatment for the disease is by prescribing reading glasses to improve vision. Pilocarpine drops can be given to lessen symptoms. Severe cases meanwhile require thoracic sympathectomy.
Symptoms and Signs:
The most common symptom of the disease is a tonically dilated pupil. Other signs include photophobia and reading difficulties.
Causes:
The disease is caused by either bacterial or viral infections.
