Cataplexy
Definition:

Cataplexy is a term that is used to refer to that medical condition where the person has a narcolepsy or that disorder which manifest as an excessive daytime sleepiness due to sleep paralysis and disturbed night time sleep. It can also show effect of an SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is made through physical examination and undergoing a continuous auditory pulse oximeter.


Treatment:

Treatment includes administration of tricyclic antidepressants such as clomipramine, protriptuline and imipramine. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors may also be used to treat cataplexy.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms includes weakness of the muscle, drooping head, slumping of the shoulder, sagging jaws, weakness of the knee, total collapse, double vision, inability to focus, exhilaration of anger, fear, and laughter.


Causes:

It is said to be caused by a narcolepsy or in some cases Hydrocephalus.
