Catatonia
Definition:

Catatonia is a term used to refer to a syndrome whereby a person experience psychic and motoric disturbances. It is commonly associated with other psychiatric condition such as schizophrenia, post-traumatic disorder, depression, bipolar disorder and other mental disorders.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis includes physical examination and evaluation of symptoms as they manifest. Usually the medical condition is said to be present where there are at least two symptoms like the presence of motor immobility, hyperactivity of motor skills, mutism and echolalia or echopraxia.


Treatment:

Treatment includes administration of Benzodiazepines, lorazepam for the muscle rigidity, Lorazepam and undergoing therapies such as Electroconvulsive therapy.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms includes loss of motor ability and hyperactivity of motor skills. Occurrence of rigid poses for hours, waxy flexibility and showing resistance to movement in accordance to the force applied by a stimuli.


Causes:

It is associated with mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post traumatic disorder and depressions.
