Cauliflower Ear
Definition:

Cauliflower Ear otherwise known as the Hematoma Auris or the Perichondrial Hematoma is a medical condition where there is blood clotting or collection of fluids under the perichondrium due to a blow in the external portion of the ear thus causing its swelling that resembles that of a cauliflower. It usually occurs in person involve with wrestling sports, martial arts and rugby players.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis of the cauliflower ear includes undergoing physical examination of the patient including review of his or her medical history and activities which may brought about the condition.


Treatment:

Treatment of Cauliflower Ear includes administration of antibiotic to lessen the infections and undergoing procedures design to reconnect the perichondrium and the cartilage. Cosmetic procedures are also used to correct the appearance of the ear.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms includes the swelling of the external portion of the ear including pain and burning sensation.


Causes:

It is usually cause by a trauma or a blow on the outermost portion of the ear which causes blood clotting of the skin and thereafter interrupts the normal connection of the skin to the ear cartilage depriving the latter of nutrients resulting from its death and cause it to swell to form a cauliflower like ear.
