Cheyletiellosis
Definition:

Cheyletiellosis is a mild type of dermatitis. Also known as the “walking dandruff”, the condition causes skin scales that are carried by the mites, which live on the skin surface of humans, cats, dogs and rabbits for 21 days as they cannot survive for more than 10 days on the host’s skin.

Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is made by visual inspection. The mites or eggs should be seen microscopically in the infected area of the skin.

Treatment:

Flea products are used in killing the mites. Weekly use of anti-flea topical treatments may help. Fibronil is an effective treatment for cats with Cheyletiellosis.

Symptoms and Signs:

When animals are infected with this mite, some experience no symptoms, while others may develop scales on the skin and experience hair loss or intense itching. Some develop lesions on the dorsum of the infected animal.
